This sounds a bit harsh if its made law especially if you have already bought the vinyl or cd and want to burn it to another cd or use it within a dj software programme, this shit might just affect every dj in the future !!

What a load of shit, clearly thought up by some muppet in an office somewhere with no idea of reality.

Looks like a complete load of bolloxs.

It has already been tested in the courts that you are allowed to make a backup copy of any media you have purchased (music,DVDs,software, films) as long as you only use one version at a time (!!??).

It also seems to imply that if you are playing the music in public that you need this licence - that's what a PRS licence is for ! Also it says if you buy this licence you will be able to copy up to 5,000 songs a year, how do they know whether youv'e copied 4,999 or 5,001 ?

Looks like a scam site to me, nothing to back it up legally and nothing to do with the PRS.

Was going to update my post after having had a closer look at the site (should have read the FAQ's oops !) It is indeed a real PRS site.

I might have got a bit confused between American and UK law regarding making backups - it all depends on the licence agreement that comes with the media. Some allow you to download music and then copy to a CD for listening on another device, others to only download and listen on a digital device such as a PC or iPod and not transfer to CD. But in general you're allowed to make a backup of media you've purchased for personal use only, how that affects performers using the backup for public performance is a bit of a grey area.

However the website only refers to the use of backups, not the original media. So if you go to HMV and buy a CD, take it home and copy it, you can use the original in a club without the ProDub licence but not the backup.

Problem is downloadable media that obviously does'nt come on CD. Again this depends on the licence agreement. I would say that if the licence allows you to copy to CD then you don't need a ProDub, if it doesn't then could you still play the track off a laptop or iPod (as per the licence agreement) without a ProDub as it's not a backup or copy ?
